Health officials in Eastern Visayas on Thursday reported that there are 16 new cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its first three deaths from the respiratory illness from three provinces in the region.
The total number of infections in the region is now at 467, with the latest cases coming from Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Samar.
The Department of Health (DOH) Eastern Visayas Center for Health Development also confirmed three new deaths.
The latest fatalities were identified as Patients EV 255, 382, and 238.
“Our three mortalities have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiac diseases, making them extremely vulnerable to COVID-19,” DOH Region 8 Director Minvera Molon said.
Patient EV 255 was a 65-year-old male from Barangay Inasuyan, Kawayan, Biliran. He was a locally stranded individual (LSI) from Metro Manila who arrived in his hometown on June 11 along with five other relatives.
The patient was hypertensive, diabetic, had acute respiratory distress syndrome, and uncontrolled cardiovascular disease. However, the validation submitted by the mortality review committee found that his death was COVID-19-related.
Patient EV 255 died on June 14, the day his swab samples were taken.
The second fatality, Patient EV 382, was a 47-year-old male LSI who arrived at his home in Barangay Aguiting, Kananga in Leyte on June 15 from Cebu.
He died on June 24 from severe pneumonia secondary to COVID-19 and acute myocardial infarction.
Contact tracing and investigation found that he had no contact with anyone from Kananga, Leyte.
Patient EV 238, an 80-year-old woman from Barangay Poblacion, Tarangan in Samar, was the third fatality.
She had diabetes, hypertension, and asthma and died of multifactorial shock such as cardiogenic shock, septic shock from community acquired pneumonia (high risk) and acute kidney failure and acute kidney failure.
The case of patient EV 238, the regional DOH office said, is the "first local transmission COVID-19 death in the region."
